PostSubject: Swords   2007-06-12, 10:22 am

I know Garandman is more about shooting weapons, but I am very much found of the cold weapons like swords (short and broad), daggers and knives

so I want to share some ideas about swords here with you:

Did you know that the word sword comes from the Old English sweord, which codid gnates to Old High German swert, Middle Dutch swaert, Old Norse sver (cp. modern Scandinavian svrd/sverd/svrd: Danish svrd, Norwegian sverd, Swedish svrd) Old Frisian and Old Saxon swerd and Modern Dutch zwaard, from a Proto-Indo-European root *swer- "to wound, to hurt"?

The swords were originally developed out of daggers in the times of the bronze age. it was possible because people lerned how to make longer blades withthe new technologies of producing bronce things.
Approximately since 13 Ct BC people made the iron swords. they were not as good as the bronze ones but kings could equip armies with swords because the iron was easily made out. (Greek xypgos and Roman gldius are the sambles of short swords of the iron age)
Chinese steel swords make their appearance from the 3rd century BC Qin Dynasty. The Chinese Dao (刀 pinyin dāo) is single-edged, sometimes translated as sabre or broadsword, and the Jian (劍 pinyin jin) double edged.
THE cheme of the sword:
The sword consists of the blade and the hilt. The term scabbard applies to the cover for the sword blade when not in use.

that is the Japanese sword Katana:

Katana (刀:かたな, Katana?) is a type of Japanese backsword or longsword (大刀:だいとう, daitō?). In use after the 1400s, the Katana is a curved, single-edged sword traditionally used by the samurai. Pronounced [kah-tah-nah] in the kun'yomi (Japanese reading) of the kanji 刀, the word has been adopted as a loan word by the English language; as Japanese does not have separate plural and singular forms, both "katanas" and "katana" are considered acceptable plural forms in English. (acording to wikipedia)

forgoten in the pic of the braod sword was the 'ricasso' the ricasso is located just ahead of the crossgraud, on the blade. this, on Bayonets, is where the maker name, serial number and year of manufacture goes.
on a military Katana, the serial number is on the ricasso. But all maker info is located under the handle. on the Katana, you can remove the handle . and crossguard by removing a bamboo pin at the back edge of the handle, well roughly 2- 3 inchges from the end....
